For people
with disabilities, being part of community life is essential. This
includes having access to the same types of services and enjoying
the same opportunities as the rest of the community.
For the
greater part of the 20th Century, many people with disabilities were
separated from society or unable to access services because of their
particular disability.
The
United Nations played an important role in bringing about changes
which would enable people with disabilities to be more fully integrated
into their communities. New legislation and increased services for
people with disabilities have made this a reality in Australia.
